What's The Deal With LEGO Piece 32557?

In recent days, there’s been a certain surge in demand for a LEGO piece. This happens from time to time, though it’s usually for rare or out of print minifigs which count as one piece.

This, however, is a very different kind of story. It’s a different piece designed exclusively to fill a function with a certain brand of LEGO sets. It’s not uncommon, but not too widespread. You likely won’t find it in the next set you buy unless it’s got moving parts.

LEGO piece 32557 history significance and what is it

What Is The LEGO Piece 32557?

It’s the Technic Pin Connector Perpendicular Double 3L, Piece number 32557. Why is this piece so popular? Well…There are LEGO birds, like set #21301 and LEGO bees such as the ones included in the LEGO Minecraft Bee Farm #21165. And speaking of the birds and the bees… Piece 32557 got famous because it looks like a penis.

The History Behind the Piece

Yes, LEGO are for everyone, even those with the most juvenile sense of humor. This all started last year, hot off the controversial suspicions around LEGO piece 26047, which looks almost exactly like a crewmate from the video game Among Us. That post was made on Reddit on March 1st, 2021.

Just one week later, possibly prompted by the online scavenger hunt to find more suspicious looking LEGO pieces, someone posted 32557 on r/mildlypenis, a subreddit dedicated to collecting images that look sort of phallic without being explicit.

From there the meme sort of just took off, with people using images of the LEGO piece in provocative or side-by-side from the basic google image searches to make more suggestive statements. It was combined with other memes, such as the Drake approval meme, and further posts continued seeking out complementary pieces.

Piece 53586 was used as a larger “connector” for comparison sake.

Then, the meme shifted to warning people not to search for piece 32557. Which, of course, made them want to search it, and elongated the meme by another few months. The hunt for more phallic LEGO pieces continued, but none got as big as piece 32557.

Specifications of The Piece

This LEGO piece was originally released in 2001. At the time of writing, LEGO piece 32557 has made an appearance in 156 sets. Some of these sets include the BMW M 1000 RR (42130), Bucket Wheel Excavator (42055), and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (42093.) The LEGO piece weighs in at .85 grams and the piece package’s dimensions come out to 1.52 x 2.32 x 0.8 cm.

In Summary

For better context, the piece itself sees use in sets that have moving parts, primarily from the LEGO Technic line. It has two front-facing holes and a bar which goes down into a rounded end with two vertical holes that go the other direction. It could, for instance, be used at a sort of hip joint where two rods can thread through the lower/longer section and be connected by holding pins that go front to back on the top holes to connect two halves of a model together.

But that’s not why people like it. People like LEGO because when they are given a bunch of different, random pieces, they see all kinds of bulbs and creations that can be made. And occasionally one piece in particular, or one chunk of a full build, will stand out. And they do say that LEGO brings out the kid in everyone. Including their humor.
